The Research Behind the Program

Her graduate research in thanatology examined the evolving role of death and end-of-life doulas and how non-clinical support can work alongside healthcare systems and the broader end-of-life care landscape.
Research increasingly recognizes the complementary value death and end-of-life doulas may provide to people and families. The larger challenge is how the role is understood, defined, coordinated, and integrated alongside established systems of care.
The literature identifies persistent challenges related to role clarity, professional identity, scope and professional boundaries, inconsistent understanding of the doula role, and communication and collaboration between doulas and healthcare professionals. Research also points to limited and inconsistent structures for integrating doulas into existing health and social care systems.
Broader palliative-care and implementation research further demonstrates the importance of organizational readiness, clearly defined roles and expectations, stakeholder engagement, feasibility, and sustainability when introducing new collaborative approaches to care.
There is a place in the work for the death doula—a non-clinical, collaborative, and professional role that works alongside people, families, healthcare, hospice, and community care. Realizing that potential requires clarity about the role, appropriate boundaries, professional preparation, and the ability to work collaboratively within the broader end-of-life care landscape.
The Confident Death Doula™ was developed in response to that gap.
The Program helps trained doulas strengthen professional identity, articulate their role and value, work within appropriate boundaries, develop sustainable practices, prepare for professional collaboration, and understand how their work can contribute to continuity of support beyond clinical care.
The Founding 100: First Implementation of the Model
The Founding 100 is the first facilitated implementation of The Confident Death Doula™. The Program has a defined 12-month structure and is informed by research into the evolving needs of the end-of-life doula field. Participants receive the complete professional-development experience, structured guidance, implementation support, and opportunities to provide feedback.
The Founding 100 is not a test of an unstructured idea. Reasonable aspects of curriculum delivery, participant support, technology, and operations may be refined through participant experience, implementation learning, feedback, and emerging industry research.
Participants help BVV evaluate and strengthen the Program and professional ecosystem while remaining independent professionals responsible for their own practices, services, and professional decisions.
Death doulas are entering an evolving field in which the role is still developing in how it is understood, communicated, integrated into existing systems, and sustained in practice.
Training prepares doulas for important aspects of end-of-life support. Moving from training into professional practice, however, also requires doulas to understand where they fit, communicate what they do, establish appropriate boundaries, develop a sustainable practice, work alongside healthcare and community care, and remain connected to an informed professional community.
The Program helps trained doulas move from education into professional practice with greater clarity, confidence, and connection.

The goal is not one prescribed business model. It is a practice whose services, relationships, and reach make sense for the way you want to serve.
A doula might develop a caregiver workshop for a hospice. Another might create a grief-education event with a community organization. Another may build a remembrance program. Another may focus primarily on direct family care.
Some offerings may be paid directly by participants. Others may be supported through organizational relationships, sponsorship, philanthropy, collaboration, or another arrangement.

What participation looks like
FOUNDATION™ begins with two weeks of onboarding and setup, followed by a 10-week curriculum delivered primarily through email, alongside scheduled group support and included individual coaching.
MOMENTUM™ and SUSTAINABILITY™ are not structured around weekly curriculum emails and focus more on implementation, group support, professional application, and platform readiness. Founding Group calendars will provide specific session schedules.

Public profile functionality will become available as this experience is integrated with the broader BVV ecosystem.
Your Mobile Experience
BVV Connect is accessible through the web on your phone. A dedicated mobile experience at DeathDoula.app is also on the roadmap to make applicable professional tools, learning, events, updates, and connections easier to access on the go.
Through BVV Connect and PTW Collective™, doulas can strengthen their professional visibility within the BVV ecosystem. Their profiles and professional information may be seen by partnering organizations, healthcare, hospice, community organizations, and other end-of-life professionals, which can support future connection and collaboration.
Together, these parts of the ecosystem are designed to give the work you build during The Confident Death Doula™ somewhere to live, grow, and continue beyond the program.

The three groups
The three Founding Groups are named by their founding numbers. Those names do not indicate the number of participants in each group. Start dates appear in the Founding 100 Pilot Calendar above.
Each Founding Group requires a minimum of 20 enrolled participants to begin as scheduled. If the minimum is not met, BVV may defer the group and transfer enrolled participants to the next available Founding Group without penalty.

The $3,997 Founding Program Investment covers the complete 12-month professional-development experience. Payment is due in full. Eligible applicants may be offered Klarna or Afterpay through Stripe at checkout. Availability, approval, payment schedules, fees, and financing terms are determined by the financing provider. TCDD does not offer a monthly payment plan.
Founding pilot pricing applies only to the Founding 100. Future cohorts will be offered at a higher investment.

Founding Renewal
Eligible Founding Doulas who successfully complete the Program and remain in good standing may continue active professional membership through an optional annual renewal.

Your Founding status remains part of your professional history. Your Founding Doula Number and place within the Founding 100 do not expire and are not dependent upon annual renewal.
The optional $397 annual renewal maintains eligible active PTW Collective™ membership and continued access to designated professional-community benefits, Learning Commons resources, public professional-profile functionality, and applicable BVV Connect tools, visibility, inquiries, opportunities, and participation as those features are available.
Renewal is not automatic unless the participant separately selects and authorizes recurring billing. Current renewal benefits and terms will be presented before renewal.
Founding Doulas who do not renew retain their Founding designation, Founding Doula Number, completion history, and ownership of their completed professional materials. Their Founding designation remains associated with their profile or permanent Founding Registry record. Active membership, public discovery, inquiries, Learning Commons access, and applicable platform functionality may be paused or moved to an inactive or archived status until an eligible renewal is completed.

The Founding 100 is now enrolling. Complete the Interest Form to begin. We’ll learn more about your death/end-of-life doula training, where you are in your practice, and what you want to build over the next 12 months. From there, we’ll meet for a brief enrollment conversation. If your background and professional goals align with the Program, you may be invited to reserve your Founding 100 place.

Invited applicants may reserve their Founding 100 place with the $3,997 Founding 100 Interim Reservation Payment. You will receive the Interim Reservation Notice and a secure payment link. Review and acknowledge the Notice, then submit the payment to hold your Founding Group space and provisional Founding Doula Number. The payment is refundable before the Founding Doula Agreement is signed, less actual nonrefundable third-party payment-processing or financing fees.
The Confident Death Doula™ is a professional development program for trained death doulas.
Participation requires prior completion of foundational death doula training or other end-of-life doula education acceptable to BVV. Documentation may be required during onboarding.
Participants are expected to establish an appropriate lawful business structure and maintain professional liability insurance as part of professional readiness. If these are not already in place at enrollment, they must be addressed during FOUNDATION™ before participants move into MOMENTUM™ and further professional application. General liability insurance, background screening, or additional requirements may also apply depending on specific services, events, venues, organizational relationships, or other applicable requirements.
Participants are expected to complete at least 80% of designated required activities throughout the program. Successful completion also requires completion of the Professional Integration Portfolio™, professional profile and required information, assessments, surveys and evaluations, business and insurance readiness, required onboarding items, and applicable professional, legal, safety, confidentiality, and completion requirements.
Participation does not guarantee clients, referrals, revenue, employment, job placement, contracts, sponsorship, funding, or organizational partnerships. The Program does not provide professional licensure or government credentialing. Participants remain responsible for their independent businesses, services, professional decisions, legal obligations, insurance, scope, and applicable requirements.
BVV Connect and related technology continue to be developed; functionality and timing may evolve during the Founding 100 pilot, and BVV may use a designated third-party community platform in the meantime. Participation, payment, proprietary materials, completion, technology, cancellation, renewal, and other Program terms are governed by the applicable Founding Doula Agreement and Program materials.
No. The Confident Death Doula™ assumes prior foundational death doula education. The Program focuses on professional identity, business development, mindset, collaborative readiness, professional presence, and sustainability.
No. Some Founding Doulas will be building their businesses, while others will enter with established practices, services, clients, and professional experience. Prior experience working with hospice, healthcare, or community organizations is not required.
Founding Doulas may enter the Program at different stages. Some may be developing their first professional practice, while others may already have established services, clients, or community relationships.
Every participant moves through FOUNDATION™, MOMENTUM™, and SUSTAINABILITY™ because each phase addresses a different part of professional development and allows BVV to evaluate the complete pilot model. Participants apply the work to their current stage rather than being expected to begin from the same starting point.
For one participant, FOUNDATION™ may involve creating essential practice elements. For another, it may involve reviewing and strengthening what already exists. The goal is not identical businesses or identical outcomes—it is a clear, confident, sustainable practice that reflects how each participant serves.

The $3,997 Founding 100 Interim Reservation Payment is refundable, less actual nonrefundable third-party payment-processing or financing fees, if BVV receives your complete written refund request before you sign the Founding Doula Agreement. BVV submits eligible refunds within 21 calendar days; Stripe, the participant’s financial institution, Klarna, or Afterpay may require additional processing time.
